How To Open .docx Files

A user receives an e-mail form someone they know. The e-mail has an attachment with an extension ending in .docx. The User double clicks the icon and then is asked what software they would like to use to open the file. What should the choose?

Well since the release of Microsoft Office 2007 I have been asked that very same question by more than a few users. But luckilly there is a simple solution.

To open Microsoft Office Word 2007 .docx or .docm files with Microsoft Office Word 2003, Word 2002, or Word 2000, you need to install the Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility Pack. Once the compatibility pack is installed, you can open, edit some items, and save Office Word 2007 documents in previous versions of Word.

Installation is easy. Just use the link above to to download. Save it to a place on your computer. Then browse to where you saved it and double click it. You will be prompted to accept the licensing agree (what else is new) and that is it, your done.

StumbleUpon It!

  1. Or you can write back and tell the sender to convert it to a file that everybody can read. PDF/Open Office Format… there are so many choices…
And by the way if its a filetype that you don’t know, it’s not intelligent to doubleclick it.
And why the hell do we need another filetype its just text???

  2. Rock on I totally agree. Sometimes thought I just can’t say that to a client.
